Whole30 What Is It and Why Am I Doing It

I have had a few questions since starting my whole30 about what it is and why I am doing it. What better way to answer these questions than in a blog post!

What is the Whole30?

The Whole30 is an elimination diet but it’s also so much more than that. You strip dairy, legumes, grains, soy, sugar (even honey!) from your diet for 30 days – foods that can cause allergic reactions, hormone disruptions, and inflammatory responses among other things. You get to enjoy meat/protein, healthy fats, fruit and all the veggies. You are basically hitting the reset button and letting your body heal then you can find out which foods have been leading to your acne or low energy or stomach issues or whatever your dealing with. You also end up cutting those addicting foods out so you slay the sugar dragon and deal with your cravings. You can grab the books It Starts With Food (it’s actually on sale at the time I am writing this!) and Whole30  to learn more. Even if you do not do a Whole30 these books have so much knowledge in them it’s just crazy. Every time I read them I pickup something new.

Who created the Whole30 and why?

Dallas & Melissa Hartwig created the Whole30 program from their own experiences and knowledge they gained through life and their schooling. Dallas is a functional medicine practitioner, strength & conditioning coach, Certified Sports Nutritionist, and licensed physical therapist. Melissa is a Certified Sports Nutritionist who specializes in helping people change their relationship with food and create life-long, healthy habits. Both amazing people doing amazing things!

Why am I doing a Whole30?

Well because of all of the above. I want better sleep and more energy to be with my family. I want to heal and balance my hormones. I want to be healthy for MY body. I want to know how certain foods affect me so I can make educated decisions on what I actually want to eat. I don’t want to crave foods that I know are less healthy for me and I don’t want to rely on food when i’m stressed or emotional anymore. To me it’s more of a why wouldn’t I do a Whole30. Yes it’s hard. Yes sometimes I wish I could just eat whatever, but the things I am learning about myself, my mind and my body are invaluable. Not only am I letting my gut and body heal but i’m proving to myself that I’m worth it. and that I CAN DO HARD THINGS. That I do have will power and I don’t have to rely on cheat days or counting calories or using containers (not that the containers are all that bad because they really helped and taught me a lot about portion control and I still really do recommend them but I needed to heal my relationship with food). Getting rid of the pmdd that appeared after I weaned my youngest was a big reason as well. I have so many reasons for doing this. Some of you my resonate with some and some of you may not.

Now it is your turn. Have you done a Whole30? I would love to hear your experience and any advice you may have!
