How to Reset Your Homeschool—Anytime You Need It

Maybe you’re burnt out. Maybe the curriculum isn’t working. Maybe there was an illness or a death in the family. Or maybe life just got life-y. Whether it’s the middle of winter or the final weeks of spring, it’s never too late—or too early—to reset your homeschool.

Here’s a gentle guide to stepping back, regrouping, and starting fresh.

1. Pause and Pray

Start by stepping away. Take a full day (or week) off if you need it. Spend time with the Lord and ask Him: What do my children really need? What do I need? Let Him guide your heart before you reset your plans.

2. Reflect on What’s Working (and What’s Not)

Grab a notebook and answer:

  • What subjects are my kids thriving in?
  • What’s causing stress or tears?
  • What have we loved learning together?

You might be surprised what patterns emerge. Don’t be afraid to let go of what’s not working—even if it’s what you thought would be perfect.

3. Revisit Your “Why”

Why did you start homeschooling? What’s your vision for your family’s education? A reset is the perfect time to refocus on your bigger purpose beyond daily checkboxes.

4. Simplify the Schedule

Cut what you can. Focus on the essentials—Bible, reading/writing, math, and one extra subject. You can always build back up, but less is often more, especially in seasons of overwhelm.

5. Make it Fun Again

Reset by doing something different:

  • Take a week for a themed unit study (space week, baking week, missions week!)
  • Go on daily nature walks and journal what you see
  • Watch a documentary and build a project around it

This jumpstarts curiosity and reminds everyone that learning is supposed to be enjoyable.

6. Declutter the Space

Sometimes a homeschool reset starts with the room. Clean out shelves. Toss broken crayons. Display fresh supplies and a few inspiring books. A tidy space inspires clearer minds.

7. Reset Your Own Heart

Burnout is real. And so is the weight of feeling like you’re not doing enough. Take time to rest, laugh, worship, and care for your own soul. Your kids need a joyful, grace-filled mom more than a Pinterest-worthy plan.
