Natural Hair Lightening Spray for Nostalgic Sun-Kissed Summer Hair

If you grew up in the 90s like I did, you probably remember the citrusy sprays we used to lighten our hair in the summer. That golden, sun-kissed look was the ultimate vibe—especially when paired with bare feet, friendship bracelets, and all-day bike rides.

Now as a mom trying to stick to more natural living, I wanted to recreate that effect without the harsh chemicals and fake fragrances. So we whipped up this easy DIY hair lightening spray using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

Even better? It’s a quick, fun project to do with your teens. My kids love learning these old-school beauty tricks—with a healthy, homemade twist.

DIY Natural Hair Lightening Spray

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup water (filtered or distilled)
  • ¼ cup lemon juice (fresh or bottled)
  • ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • Optional: 1 tsp dried chamomile (brightens blonde and soothes and nourishes)
  • Optional: 1 tsp dried rosemary (stimulates the scalp + adds a light herbal scent)

Instructions:

  1. If using herbs, steep them in hot water for 10–15 minutes. Let cool and strain.
  2. Mix your herbal tea (or plain water), lemon juice, and hydrogen peroxide in a jar or bottle.
  3. Shake well and store in the fridge. Use within 1–2 weeks.

How to Use

Spray lightly onto damp or dry hair, focusing on areas you want to brighten—like the top layers or ends. Spend some time in the sun, and let nature gently bring out lighter, golden tones over time.(You can technically use a blow dryer as well but results won’t be as good as heading out into the sun!)

Tips:

  • Use 2–3 times per week for gradual results
  • Works best on lighter hair colors (blonde to light brown)
  • Follow with conditioner or hair oil to keep strands soft
  • Be sure to use some screen on your scalp to ensure you don’t burn

Why We Love It

This spray gives your hair that sun-kissed, effortless summer look we all loved growing up—but without any harsh ingredients. It’s quick, affordable, and a nostalgic nod to simpler summers. Plus, it smells fresh and feels like a sunshine day in a bottle.

And yes—my kids were all in on this one! It’s such a fun activity to do together and makes hair care feel more like self-care.
